Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) draw huge attention because of their remarkable optical, electrical, magnetic, and electrochemical properties. Van der Waals layered phases and their topological variants provide excellent material platforms to explore exciting physical phenomena, such as type-II topological Dirac semimetal, chiral superconductor, quantum anomalous Hall insulator, and Axion insulator. Single-crystalline ultrathin films of novel chalcogenide phases are readily essential for characterizing the fundamental properties of TMCs in the 2D limit. Here, we present epitaxial growth of TMC films among selenides and tellurides, such as semiconducting ReSe2, MoSe2,[1,2] correlated metallic V(S,Se)2 with charge-density wave,[3,4] and ferromagnetic Cr2Te3.[5] On the ultrathin epitaxial films, we could reveal electronic band structures by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), or X-ray absorption (XAS). We further extend our efforts to synthesizing novel TMC phases including sulfide and oxysulfide.[6]
